Dr. Thomas Cooper specializes in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and works with adolescents, adults, and families presenting with a variety of needs. ACT is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that emphasizes client values, mindfulness (focus on the present moment), and purposeful behaviors.
Dr. Cooper graduated from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (now William James College) with a Psy.D., and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Connecticut College. He completed his predoctoral internship with the University of Southern Maine where he specialized in individual psychotherapy and suicide prevention. He has worked in mental health settings ranging from an inpatient substance abuse clinic to McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA.
Dr. Cooper has been actively involved with the Maine Psychological Association (MePA) since 2012 and served as the Committee Chair for both the Early Career Psychologist Committee and the Reimbursement Oversight Committee for several years. He is a past-President of the organization, having served as MePA President from 2020-2022.
Dr. Cooper is an avid outdoorsman and loves the recreational opportunities in southern Maine. He is a diehard Boston sports fan, has been known to tell terrible jokes, and he also loves cooking, traveling, and relaxing in his hammock.
